1. Shannon Sharpe, Tight End (Round 7, Pick 192, 1990)

Not many people had heard of former Savannah State tight end Shannon Sharpe when he came into the 1990 NFL Draft. However, it wouldn’t take long before the Broncos gave him a chance in the NFL, allowed him to play a big role in their offense, and ultimately watched the big man go on to play a Hall of Fame career.

Starting in 1992, Sharpe made it to seven consecutive Pro Bowls with the Broncos. He garnered four first-team All-Pro selections in that span as well. Sharpe became arguably the most prolific pass catching tight end the league had seen up to that point, catching 815 passes in his career (he did spend two seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, for what it’s worth) for over 10,000 yards receiving and 62 receiving touchdowns.

What Sharpe was able to do for the Broncos and over the course of his career from the tight end position would have been well worth a first round pick. But he lasted all the way into the seventh round, and the only team that seemed to realize what the Savannah State product was capable of was Denver, which is why Sharpe comes in as their best draft pick of all time.
