MLB Trade Deadline: One trade each team should make
By Jason Evans
Philadelphia Phillies-Jeremy Hellickson to the Orioles for Joe Gunkel
If the Orioles are going to continue their great start this season, they are going to need some starting pitching reinforcements. They are getting Kevin Gausman back, but just lost Yovani Gallardo to a shoulder injury. They don’t have a ton of prospects to trade but they part with Gunkel here. Gunkel put up pretty good numbers in AA last year, but this year has struggled.
Hellickson is a free agent after the season which hurts his value a bit, but has been a bit uneven after posting two good initial starts for the Phillies. He has experience pitching in the AL East which is huge and is an expiring contract which will help the Orioles since onwer Peter Angelos doesn’t want to push the envelope too much in regards to payroll. If Hellickson does well in a weak free agent class, he could set himself up this off-season.
For the Phillies, the trade of Hellickson can open up a spot in the rotation for one of their young arms, whether its Jake Thompson or Mark Appel. The Phillies can continue their transition with their young arms and add another one into the system for them to take a look at.
