MLB Trade Deadline: One trade each team should make
By Jason Evans
Baltimore Orioles– Christian Walker and Parker Bridwell to the Padres for Andrew Cashner
The Orioles are off to a great start, but you have to wonder when the bottom is going to fall out of their starting pitching staff. They have a deep and versatile offense, but they may not have enough starting pitching to get the job done. Even with this deal, they still may not, but it’ll help. For the O’s, they can add Casher who has been a victim of some bad BABIP luck over the past couple of seasons, but still has power stuff and may just need to get out of San Diego. Dave Wallace is an excellent pitching coach and should be able to help Cashner develop further in his contract year. Who knows, with an excellent finish for the O’s, Cashner could find himself in a nice position to get paid next season.
For the Padres, Walker can go right into left field for them instead of playing Melvin Upton Jr. Walker doesn’t have a spot with the club, especially with Chris Davis back in the long-term. Walker can also give the Padres some depth at first if Wil Myers goes down with an injury. They also get Bridwell, who gives them a pitching prospect in a system that has been stripped of them when A.J. Preller went big game hunting before the 2015 season.
