Boston Red Sox- Rusney Castillo and Brian Johnson to San Diego for James Shields

It’s clear that the Red Sox do not want Rusney Castillo around. That signing just hasn’t worked and Dave Dombrowski isn’t a fan of his. The Red Sox starting rotation is struggling outside of David Price and Steven Wright. The Sox need help there. There were the rumors of Pablo Sandoval for James Shields, but Sandoval is injured and who knows when he can play again.

Shields can fill a void and join his former Rays’ teammate in Boston. He can be an innings eater and already has experience pitching in the American League East.

For San Diego, they get Castillo, who they can put in the outfield and have just let him play. It may be the best thing for him to get out of Boston and let his talent flourish in a new situation. With Johnson, they get a cost controlled, young starter without much experience and can step into Shields’ spot in the rotation. The Padres spree before last season didn’t work and they’ve been trying to tear down the pieces that they got and rebuild. They sent Craig Kimbrel to Boston, why not send Shields too?
