2016 NFL mock draft: Final edition
DeForest Buckner, DE, Oregon
The Chicago Bears used to have one of the best defenses in the NFL, back in the day of Brian Urlacher, Charles Tillman and Lance Briggs. Now, the unit has fallen into the bottom third of the league, although head coach John Fox and general manager Ryan Pace seem intent on fixing that situation.
This offseas saw the signings of middle linebackers Danny Trevathan and Jerrell Freeman, a pair of players who really solidify the run defense. With that in mind, Chicago can focus on the defensive line and DeForest Buckner would be a great fit in Vic Fangio’s 3-4 defense. Buckner is 289 pounds, so he might need to add about 10 pounds to become the perfect size on the end.
All that said, Buckner is an elite athlete who would be a steal at this position. He can move inside as well or stay on the edge should the Bears try to mix up looks and go with a 4-3 look in subpackages. Buckner would provide defensive coordinator Vic Fangio with ample options and much-needed versatility on a defense that is starting to come together in the front seven. If Buckner is on the board at this juncture, it represents tremendous value.
