4. Mike Rumph

In the early 2000’s, the Miami Hurricanes football program was on top of the world and had some of the best collections of talent that college football has ever seen on one team. The Hurricanes’ team from that area proceeded to put several players in the NFL and many of them ended up having long successful careers.

The San Francisco 49ers took Mike Rumph with the No. 27 pick in the draft and they had hoped he would be the next great defensive back in 49ers history. After failing to pan out as a cornerback in the NFL, the 49ers tried to move Rumph to safety, to fit his size and mold.

He wasn’t any better as a safety and it was clear that he wasn’t going to become a good pro in the NFL. He didn’t play many years in the NFL and he didn’t see the field often, but when he did play, he was often seen letting an opposing receiver score a touchdown.

The Hurricanes team from that era will forever go down in history and Rumph’s accomplishments in college can’t be understated. Unfortunately, that’s about where the story of Rumph comes to end in a positive manner.
