15 best NBA Draft Lottery lucky charms
6. Blake Griffin sports coat, Los Angeles Clippers
At the 2009 NBA Draft Lottery, Clippers President Andy Roeser decided to sacrifice fashion for fortune.
There was little controversy surrounding the 2009 NBA Draft, as everyone knew Griffin was going to be the first overall pick and had the upside to turn around a team quickly. Los Angeles simply needed the top pick after a 19-win season and 12th playoff miss over a span of 13 years.
Roeser ordered a custom-made sports coat that had a Griffin #1 Clippers jersey was sewn into part of the inside. As this picture via NBA.com shows, the jacket wasn’t exactly stylish, but it was effective.
The Clippers did indeed end up with the first overall pick despite entering with the third-best odds to do so. After missing the 2009-10 season with a knee injury, Griffin has been a star, averaging 21.5 points per game for his career.
Not only did the Clippers get a franchise centerpiece in Griffin, the fortunes of the team have turned around since. Los Angeles has made the playoffs in five straight seasons and is no longer under the ownership of Donald Sterling.
Roeser’s good luck charm idea was simple enough one has to wonder why it hasn’t been present at more Lotteries, but it certainly produced results.
