Manny Machado open to long-term deal with Orioles
By Brandon Ogle
At a recent charity event, Baltimore Orioles’ young phenom Manny Machado expressed a desire to remain in Baltimore.
After a quick start to the 2016 season, it’s quickly becoming apparent that the Baltimore Orioles have a superstar on their hands with Manny Machado. Coming off a season where he hit 35 home runs and notched a second All-Star game nod, big things were expected and he’s certainly produced. Through just 36 games, Machado is hitting .333 with 11 long balls.
With this kind of production and the fact that he’s just 23 years old, Machado is the type of guy you’d like to lock up into a long-term deal. He’s currently signed through the 2016 season and will be arbitration eligible in 2017. The questions about the coming years have been plentiful in the Baltimore area and continued at a recent charity bowling event called the “Manny Machado Basebowl Tournament.”
When asked about signing a long-term deal with the Orioles before becoming a free agent after the 2018 season, Machado told the Baltimore Sun, “I hope I do. Obviously, I came up with the organization, but that’s out of my hands. The only thing I can do is do what I’m doing now, play for my team, playing for a ring, hopefully to bring back a ring to the city.”
A long-term deal with Machado will likely demand a hefty paycheck, but then again, players of the caliber of Machado don’t come around every day. Additionally, it wouldn’t be out of question to see Machado becoming one of the highest paid infielders in the game. His current production and potential are simply that good.
