16. Clippers Take Darius Miles at No. 3 (2000)

Newcomers to the NBA in terms of fans may think of the Los Angeles Clippers as the high-flying team that houses the likes of Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, and DeAndre Jordan. They weren’t always that team, though, and weren’t even close. The Clippers have actually been the punch line of the NBA for far longer than they’ve been relevant in terms of success. However, the 2000 NBA Draft was shocking even for them.

Granted, the 2000 draft is regarded as one of the worst in the history of the league. However, that didn’t make what the Clippers did with the No. 3 overall pick any less surprising at the time or shockingly bad in retrospect. After Kenyon Martin went off the board at No. 1 and Stromile Swift went No. 2, the Clippers stunned everyone by taking high school star Darius Miles at No. 3.

Though full of upside, Miles wasn’t regarded as that high level of a prospect heading into the draft. Moreover, he wasn’t expected to be taken ahead of Mike Miller, Marcus Fizer, or several others taken after him when it came to the draft. While most of those players failed to work out also, that doesn’t make the selection any less of a shock.
