18. Bulls Win No. 1 Pick (2008)

There were numerous big-time talents available in the 2008 NBA Draft, even if all of them didn’t completely work out when it was all said and done. It was a draft class that included Michael Beasley, O.J. Mayo, Russell Westbrook, Kevin Love, Brook Lopez, and of course Derrick Rose. In such a draft, the No. 1 pick was obviously ridiculously valuable, which is what made what ultimately happened all the more shocking.

In the previous season, the Chicago Bulls finished the year with a 33-49 record, only the ninth worst record in the entire league. That gave them just a 1.7 percent chance at winning the No. 1 overall pick entering the NBA Lottery. When all of the Ping Pong ball dust settled, though, it was the Bulls that had won the first-overall pick.

Of course, Chicago went on to select Rose out of Memphis and he would go on to set the world on fire almost immediately. He’d win an MVP and become a local hero quickly, but fall equally as quickly after a slew of knee injuries completely derailed his career. Even with how disappointing it’s been with Rose of late, that doesn’t make the Bulls winning the lottery any less wild.
