The Bulls have already declared their intention to look for a point guard in the draft and Vanderbilt’s Wade Baldwin wowed draft combine enthusiasts last weekend by measuring in at 6-4 with a ridiculous 6-11.25 wingspan. That Inspector Gadget like length is what gives NBA teams hope that Baldwin will one day develop into a strong perimeter defender. Add in his 10.45 second lane agility drill time — the second quickest at the combine — and you’ve got all of the necessary tools to be an obnoxious defender capable of disrupting passing lanes and pestering ball-handlers.

Offensively, Baldwin was a solid distributor both seasons in college, but he is not an excellent pick-and-roll ball-handler and he had turnover problems at Vanderbilt, averaging a turnover on nearly 20 percent of possessions each year. Those are two skills that will require some coaching at the next level as he learns to become a better leader and capable of running an NBA team. However, one area where Baldwin excels compared to other point guards in this class is as a three-point shooter. He knocked down 40.6 percent of his 101 triples as a sophomore and made 42.2 percent of them over his two seasons in Nashville.

This pick had previously been devoted to Kentucky’s Tyler Ulis, but Baldwin’s upside as a potential starter in the NBA gives him the nod, especially for a team looking to make a more immediate impact.
