Doc Rivers seems intent about keeping his core of Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, and DeAndre Jordan together for the foreseeable future, but the Clippers still have a rather glaring need at small forward if they want to be able to compete against the Western Conference’s best. Given their position as a win-now franchise, it makes sense for Rivers to grab a more experienced prospect who can step in and contribute early on rather than one of the many high upside small forwards who could be available at this spot. Bayern Munich’s Paul Zipser is that type of player, a 22-year old who has played 17.7 minutes per game for Bayern this season.

Zipser is already a solid role player for his European team, embracing the sort of dirty work that evades many of the NBA’s star players. He isn’t the quickest or most athletic defender, but he has an excellent understanding of defensive fundamentals and should be able to guard wings on the perimeter and not flounder if forced to battle with a power forward in the paint. He isn’t much for attacking off the dribble, but playing alongside Paul won’t require that as Zipser can comfortably spot up along the perimeter. He’s made better than 40.0 percent of his threes during his career, which bodes well for his position as an offensive role player.
