27. player. 81.
Kansas product Cheick Diallo did as much as any prospect to help himself at the NBA’s draft combine recently. The 19-year old measured in at 6-9 with a nearly 7-5 wingspan. He also performed well in the 5-on-5 drills where he flashed the motor that made him such an intriguing prospect coming out of high school. Toronto fans can think of Diallo as a replacement for Bismack Biyombo who seems likely to cash in on his impressive postseason during free agency.

His performance caused many to ask why he didn’t see the floor more often at Kansas where he played just 7.5 minutes per game. The reason has nothing to do with Diallo’s talent – he has the potential to be an excellent pick-and-roll big man who can crash the defensive boards and protect the rim. However, Diallo struggled in a structured setting, frequently missing defensive rotations and messing up plays on the offensive end.

Nonetheless, he’s a high-upside talent who could become a player similar to Bismack Biyombo, another undersized center who plays with great energy and possesses a similar skill set. That should be enough to make Diallo a late first round pick, if not higher, come June.
