player. 66.
Saint Joseph’s DeAndre Bembry is not the prototypical “3-and-D” type wing prospect that is highly valued in today’s NBA. Unlike most other first round rated wings, Bembry doesn’t have much of a jump shot. During his three years with the Hawks, he made just 31.2 percent of his 385 three-point attempts despite taking 4.2 threes per 40 minutes. The Suns, though, have a hole at the small forward spot and Bembry’s lack of shooting can be covered up by the promising Devin Booker.

What separates Bembry from the draft’s other wing prospects is his ability to operate as a shot creator. He regularly played as a primary ball handler for Saint Joseph’s and showed solid court vision to help hit his teammates for open looks. He posted a 24.1 assist rate while averaging 4.8 assists per 40 minutes, the top mark for an NCAA small forward prospect in the DraftExpress stats database (Note: I’m not including Simmons as a potential SF). Bembry was also able to create for himself, barreling his way into the paint and attempting 38.3 percent of his shots at the rim where he made 69.1 percent of his layups or dunks.

Bembry’s unique ability to create from the wing is what allowed him to stand out during last weekend’s draft combine and it’s also what will drive his draft stock going forward, but whether or not he can develop a jump shot will likely determine his ceiling at the next level. Notably, he also has the size (6-6 with a 6-9.25 wingspan) to guard NBA wings and he even defended multiple positions in college.

To read more about DeAndre Bembry, <a href=. SF.
