PF. Xavier. David West. 5. player. 110.

When doing a re-draft, there is always one team that doesn’t luck out the same as they would the first time around. That’s why hindsight rules these things and had scouts and general managers known then what they know now, players wouldn’t have fell into the laps of teams.

In this re-draft, Dwyane Wade is already off the board and therefore the Miami Heat are the team that really suffers from it. However, the Heat already had some solid pieces on the roster when they drafted Wade and were able to trade some of them to acquire Shaquille O’Neal and make a run to their first NBA Championship.

With Wade off the board, the Heat would probably go the next best player available and in the 2003 NBA Draft, that player ended up being power forward David West. West was a solid player and went to a couple of All-Star Games with the then New Orleans Hornets.

In Miami, West could have been a good building block of the future and he likely would have played next to Alonzo Mourning, who came back to Miami to finish his career. Whether or not they would have traded for O’Neal is a question, but considering they would have likely had to move Lamar Odom with the amount of forwards on the roster, it’s a move that could have been swung.

Had Pat Riley ended up with West in the draft, he would have figured out a way to still build a winning roster.
