Top 25 MLB prospects that need to be called up right now
10. Dansby Swanson, Atlanta Braves
No current minor leaguer is more aligned with the image and brand of his team moving forward than Dansby Swanson is to Atlanta. After he was traded less than a year after being the first overall selection by Arizona Diamondbacks in last June’s amateur draft, Swanson is cutting his teeth as a fast track prospect in his hometown organization (Swanson is a native of Kennesaw, Georgia).
The Braves season is essentially a wash already, which should make giving their young talent some big league experience the top priority for the rest of the year. Swanson is currently at the Double A level, after conquering the high Single A level (he hit .333 in 21 games). If he begins to tear it up at the plate in Mississippi as well, he could be a candidate to skip Triple A altogether, as the Braves have nothing to lose and could gain some gate revenue by moving up the prodigal son this summer.
He has a mature bat and uses his speed well both at the plate and in the field. With Atlanta’s incumbent everyday shortstop Erick Aybar’s slump looking more and more like a permanent decline, the pathway is clear for Swanson to take over the reins by the second half of the season.
