23. Alex Bregman, Houston Astros

Alex Bregman is a fantastic talent, but one that is caught in the wrong place (position) at the wrong time. His natural position is inhabited by Carlos Correa, so that is off the table. There could be the possibility that he tries his hand at third base, but it is contingent on how fellow top prospect Colin Moran does with his recent promotion to the position.

However, Bregman’s talent demands that some sort of effort be made to find a place for him. Houston made him the second overall pick in last spring’s draft, and he replied by quickly signing and hitting .294 in 66 games split between the low and high Single-A level. He has continued to improve at the plate in year two, hitting .330 with eight home runs over his first 24 games.

With the Houston infield being so chock full of similarly skilled young talent, a transition to the outfield could be in order as a way to find an everyday place for him. Such potential versatility makes Bregman into even more of an option to taken on the fast track to Houston this year, although if the team remains non-competitive in their division, they could opt to leave him in the minors until next season.
