24. Peter O’Brien, Diamondbacks

There are no questions about what Peter O’Brien can do at the plate. The notorious free swinger has tortured minor league pitching since he was drafted in 2012, hitting 104 homers and driving in over 300 runs. He did not relent when he got a brief, eight-game promotion last season either, getting four hits in 10 at-bats, including a home run.

He is a hacker however, walking only three times in 144 plate appearances this season. This is something that the D’Backs likely would need to see change some before he is brought up to Phoenix, and the presence of Wellington Castillo allows them to be patient. O’Brien’s lack of plate discipline is worrisome when a long-term transition to the majors is considered, as the quality of pitching won’t allow him to be so undisciplined.

In the end, a promotion is fairly certain for O’Brien, but it will likely be in a part-time/pinch hitter capacity early on in his MLB career, while he learns to focus his abilities a bit more. A late summer call up is likely, unless an injury opens a place sooner.
