5. He spends money wisely

Louis van Gaal’s biggest criticism at Manchester United was his excessive spending on players that couldn’t live up to their price tag. The best example that comes to mind is Angel di Maria, who was bought for 60 million pounds, but only scored three goals at Manchester United. The problem was obviously Van Gaal, because once he moved to Paris, he rediscovered his scoring touch.

Mourinho, on the other hand, spends a lot of money, but he spends it in the right places on the right players. Think of Chelsea’s offseason before they won the Premier League and Capital One Cup. He bought Loic Remy, Didier Drogba, and Diego Costa to fix a striker trio that had consisted of Samuel Eto’o, Fernando Torres, and Demba Ba, then he replaced Ashley Cole with Filipe Luis, and Frank Lampard with Cesc Fabregas. He got rid of dead weight and replaced them with players that are twice as skilled.

There’s no reason he can’t do the same thing at Manchester United. With players like Morata and James Rodriguez being heavily linked to the club, he could easily attract those two players while getting rid of guys like Michael Carrick and Ashley Young. Being the shrewd salesman that he is, he’d probably be able to sell those two for a hefty return on investment, too.
