Los Angeles Dodgers: Selling low on Yasiel Puig

For the past couple of years, rumors have swirled around the Dodgers regarding a possible Puig trade for numerous reasons. There may never be a right time to make such a move, but now is definitely not it.

Surprisingly, the Dodgers missed out on a few top free agents like Price, and were unable to re-sign Greinke, instead opting to bring in depth. Los Angeles is underachieving at 21-19, although that is still well within striking distance in the NL West.

One of the issues so far has been Puig struggling at the plate, as he is running a 74 wRC+ so far per FanGraphs while displaying poor plate discipline. As that is continuing a concerning trend from last year, Puig’s trade value is much lower than it once was.

We all know Puig can be much better than than this, as evidenced by his 4.1 WAR debut season in just 104 games. With other members of Los Angeles’ big outfield rotation injured or also struggling, the Dodgers have little choice but to gamble on Puig’s upside for the rest of the year.

Los Angeles can offer a strong package of prospects or salary relief rather than deal a player who could still provide value to the team.
