Miami Marlins: Trading Marcell Ozuna

The Marlins have a lot more talent than many around the nation realize, and it’s starting to show through the first couple months of 2016.

After a poor start to the season, the Marlins rattled off an impressive hot streak near the end of April and currently sit at 21-19. The problem is that’s only good enough for fourth place in the NL East, and the Marlins are probably going to have issues keeping up with the New York Mets and Washington Nationals long-term.

Miami’s most likely option is to stand pat, and a couple of role players like the red-hot Martin Prado could be traded if it falls further out. However, the Marlins should not begin to sell off their core, including Ozuna.

Ozuna was the subject of trade rumors all offseason long in connection with multiple teams, as the organization didn’t seem too pleased with him in 2015. However, Ozuna is a lot more valuable than he’s given credit for, and he constantly showed impressive power skills in the minors.

Those tools are finally resulting in production this year, as Ozuna has been one of the best hitting center fielders in the Majors. Ozuna currently has a 131 wRC+ per FanGraphs, and his 1.2 WAR has already topped his total from last year.

Hanging on the the outfield core of Ozuna, Christian Yellich and Giancarlo Stanton would give the Marlins a great building block, and they should not be selling too much off yet.
