Arizona Diamondbacks: Adding any rental

After making a couple of splash moves during the offseason the Diamondbacks entered 2016 with every intention of contenting.

Looking to improve the rotation to back a talented young group of position players, Arizona added Zack Greinke on a massive six-year, $206 million deal. Arizona also dealt for Shelby Miller from the Braves, albeit for a huge haul it may come to regret.

However, both new acquisitions have struggled, and the Diamondbacks are off to an 18-23 start. While that’s only 4.5 games out of first in the NL West, the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants seem likely to improve over the rest of the season.

The loss of A.J. Pollock for the season really hurt whatever chances Arizona had of making the playoffs. Given all the offseason moves, Tony La Russa and company may be tempted to be add another rotation piece, but the Diamondbacks would probably be better off deciding this isn’t the year to go for it.

Arizona has a lot of young talent and a farm system that should produce a few productive players despite the recent trades. Getting rid of any of member of that young core for a short-term upgrade would be a mistake.
