New York Yankees: Dealing Brett Gardner

The Yankees are the type of organization who typically retools rather than rebuilds. However, with a 16-22 record in a tough division and an offense that is really struggling to score runs, one has to wonder how far the Yankees will go at the trade deadline.

If New York is indeed a seller, Chapman and perhaps Andrew Miller will be on the market. Given the lack of starting pitching, the Yankees could go one step further and offer up Nate Eovaldi and Michael Pineda.

One veteran who should be held is Gardner, who was the subject of trade rumors throughout the offseason. Gardner is showing signs of turning things around after a down season in 2015, and the abundance of corner outfielders on the market would hurt New York’s chances to get equal value in return.

Gardner is hitting at  110 wRC+ mark, a slight improvement over last year, and is more importantly showing better plate discipline and speed on the bases. If that keeps up and Gardner continues to show he is completely healthy, he could be a nice piece on a contending Yankees team, as he’s under contract until 2018.

The Yankees should go ahead an sell the bullpen pieces, but Gardner is one player  who should stay.
