Chicago Cubs: Dealing Jorge Soler

It’s getting to the point where we have to wonder how the Cubs could realistically get much better at the trade deadline, even after losing Kyle Schwarber. Inquiring about Aroldis Chapman or adding an outfielder could be intriguing, but there are no obvious moves for Chicago.

Standing pat may be the best option on Aug. 1, even with a loaded farm system full of potential trade chips. However, there is one member of the 25-man roster that will likely come in trade rumors who the Cubs should hang on to.

Soler has long been linked to several teams as a possible trade option, including the Tampa Bay Rays over the offseason. While Soler has his flaws, he can be a useful piece to the Cubs over the rest of the season.

While he has never quite been able to put it all together, Soler’s athleticism and huge raw power gives him a very high ceiling as a hitter. Soler has struggled since his 2014 debut, but there’s still time for him to develop at just 24 years old.

Manager Joe Maddon has said the team will be patient with Soler, and he has done an excellent job of mixing and matching in the outfield in Schwarber’s absence. Trading Soler right now wouldn’t do much good for the Cubs due to his current issues at the plate, and an offseason deal might make more sense should they want to move in a different direction.
