When it comes to unique, fun, and inexplicably enjoyable events every year, the Scripps National Spelling Bee is pretty much unmatched. Now it’s that time of year once again where one young boy or girl will rise to the pinnacle of the spelling bee world as the best speller in the country, writing their name in the history book.

The 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee began with 285 spellers on Wednesday, but now the field has been narrowed down to just a select 45 that will look to become the next champion.

Whichever boy or girl wins the Scripps National Spelling Bee will win $40,000 in cash, a savings bond, tons of reference material, a trip to New York City for a Live With Kelly appearance, and of course the trophy.

However, the finalists will also get a big prize as all 44 other finalists in the 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee will get cash for doing so well.

As the stakes are now that much higher for these young men and women and as the words are now getting harder, we’ll have to see who can come through in the clutch, flex their brain muscles, and be crowned the next Scripps National Spelling Bee champion on Thursday.
