Goalies

Marc-Andre Fleury of the Pittsburgh Penguins was an understandable omission from Team Canada. After all, Canada probably has the best group of goalies of all the World Cup teams with 2014-15 Vezina Trophy and Hart Trophy winner Carey Price, 2015-16 Vezina Trophy finalist Braden Holtby, and Corey Crawford. Still, Fleury is a darn good goalie who likely would have been named to the roster of just about any other country.

Brian Elliott of the St. Louis Blues was another goalie who was omitted from Team Canada, though just like Fleury, hard to argue that Elliott deserved a spot over their impressive trio. Elliott was arguably the best goalie in the NHL this season (albeit a limited sample size), so he’d be on virtually any other team’s roster. He belongs on this list because of that.

Ryan Miller of the Vancouver Canucks clearly lost a step since his days with the Buffalo Sabres. That said, considering how much loyalty Team USA has shown to its veterans, it was a bit surprising to see Miller off the team in favor of Jonathan Quick. The sad part? You could argue that Miller is still better than Quick. Quick has a reputation for being a big time goaltender, and while that is a reputation that he might have deserved in the past, he hasn’t deserved it over the past two seasons.
