Stan Lee is no stranger to Captain America, so what’s his take on Marvel’s latest twist?

Spider-Man. The X-Men. The Fantastic Four. Iron Man. The Avengers. Stan Lee shares the credit for creating all of these (and more!) for Marvel. He’s rightly regarded as a legend, and, even at 93, he’s still making Marvel cameos and weighing in on the latest in comic books. That includes the now-infamous revelation that Captain America, Steve Rogers himself, is apparently an agent of Hydra.

Stan Lee was in Orlando this weekend for MegaCon, and during a question-and-answer session, a member of the audience inevitably asked what he thought of Steve Rogers hailing Hydra instead of, you know, punching its members in the face.

“It’s a hell of a clever idea. I don’t know that I would ever have thought of it, for him to be a double agent,” he said. “But it’s going to make you curious, it’s going to make you want to read the books, they’ll probably do a movie based on it … It’s a good idea.”

Yes, I suppose that’s a fair assessment. It is the kind of idea that will get some people to pick up Captain America: Steve Rogers after this. It is also the kind of idea that will make many people refuse to read the comics, as #SayNoToHYDRACap proves.

Here’s video of his full answer, via FANdemonium Network on YouTube:

Stan Lee does know a little something about tinkering with Cap’s history, though, as The Avengers #4 brought Steve Rogers back to life to join Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in 1964. He and Jack Kirby basically created the “man out of time” characterization that Chris Evans has brought to life on the big screen.

We’ll see if the prediction that it’ll bump Cap’s sales (and that this’ll play into a movie at some point) comes true.
