Top 15 under the radar players to watch in Copa America
2. Jesus Corona, M, Mexico
It’s understandable that some players would get lost in the shuffle of a balanced Mexico roster that includes plenty of famous names lie Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez and Rafael Marquez. Corona, a rising young talent, could join that group if Mexico goes on a deep run.
At 23 years old, Corona already has experience at big clubs in both Mexico and Europe. Corona debuted as a 17-year-old at Monterrey in 2010 before moving on to Twente and FC Porto, where he plays currently.
In 28 games with Porto this year, Corona turned in one of his best professional seasons yet, including eight goals. Corona has five goals in 20 games with the Mexico senior team, including one in the Gold Cup final win against Jamaica last year.
Osorio has favored Corona in Mexico’s undefeated run since he took over, as the Porto midfielder fits in with the ultra-athletic lineup El Tri likes to deploy, and his skill on the ball will rank as one of the best in the tournaent. Mexico will be counting on Corona to provide pace on the wing while setting up opportunities for Hernandez.
If young players like Corona live up to their potential alongside the established stars on Mexico’s roster, El Tri will be tough to beat in the Copa America Centenario.
