13. Ronald Matarrita, D, Costa Rica

The 21-year-old Matarrita has had a solid debut season in the MLS, and now has a chance to grab worldwide attention as a key cog in the Costa Rica defense.

Matarrita made 67 appearances for top Costa Rican side Alajuelense, including some impressive performances against a pair of MLS clubs in the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League. New York City FC took notice and signed Mararrita to be the starting left back in a new-look backline.

The move has worked out, as New York City FC’s defense has looked much improved from last year’s squad that allowed 55 goals, at least prior to a disastrous 7-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls on May 21. Matarrita has been the best player on the unit so far, and should again rise to the challenge in the Copa America, as he already has some experience with the full national team.

With great pace and athleticism, look for Matarrita to provide some pace and athleticism for Costa Rica. In addition, Matarrita has shown an ability to get forward and distribute for New York City FC, and should help open up the field.

The Costa Rica defense has given the United States problems over the past five years, and it will again be challenged by Matarrita in their June 7 group stage match.
