11. Alfredo Talavera, G, Mexico

Mexico is one of the favorites to win the tournament due to its plethora of attacking options, but plenty of pressure is going to fall on the shoulders of Talavera, who is leading the race to be the No. 1 keeper for El Tri.  Talavera is certainly capable of leading Mexico on a title run as the most underrated goalkeeper in the tournament, even if he isn’t the biggest name.

The 33-year-old has spent his entire career in Liga MX, including a long stint at Guadalajara and current six-year run as starter at Toluca. Over those five years, Talavera has helped Toluca to a title win and two more semifinals appearances while leading one of the best defenses in Liga MX.

Talavera got his first call-up to the national team in 2011, and has taken advantage of a great opportunity recently. Mexico hasn’t lost or surrendered a goal in five games since hiring Juan Carlos Osorio as head coach, with Talavera keeping a clean sheet in starts against Honduras and Canada.

Fellow Mexico goaltenders Memo Ochoa and Jose de Jesus Corona are both fine options on the roster, but Osorio seems to favor Talavera. Osorio has repeatedly said that Talavera could be starting in the English Premier League and prefers his aerial style to defend against set pieces.

If Osorio’s word is true, El Tri will be even better than advertised. A good attack will not be enough, as Talavera will get a challenge right away in the group stage opener against Uruguay.
