5 reasons Josh Rosen can win the 2016 Heisman Trophy
The wow moments
Every Heisman Trophy winner needs multiple moments that resonate with the voters when the awards ballots are cast. Individual like Johnny Manziel’s wild improvisation against Alabama in 2012 or Cam Newton dragging Patrick Peterson of LSU into the end zone can make a difference should the Heisman race be close.
Given that Rosen is a traditional pocket passer rather than a running quarterback, it would figure that he might have trouble separating himself from the likes of Watson or Barrett in that regard. However, Rosen showed plenty of ability to produce “wow” moments of his own as a freshman.
Plenty such moments came in Rosen’s terrific opener against Virginia, as he looked confident in making high-level throws in his first game out of high school. Rosen completed a particularly impressive 30-yard touchdown pass to Thomas Duarte in the second quarter that required perfect accuracy.
Rosen was produce similar moments throughout the season, especially against California when he outplayed future No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff. With five touchdowns of over 50 yards or more, Rosen memorably showed off his downfield passing ability often as a freshman.
Expect more of that as Rosen continues to develop and improve as a sophomore. Rosen will be must-watch TV in 2016 as one of the most hyped players in the nation, which could help him in the Heisman discussion.
