5. San Jose Sharks
Considering that the San Jose Sharks have just 16 players signed for next season and that they will have just over $10 million of cap space, re-signing James Reimer will be a difficult task. It will be even tougher because Tomas Hertl and Matt Nieto, among others, will need a raise in 2016-17 and Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau, and Brent Burns will each be free agents after the 2016-17 season. However, if Reimer is willing to take a discount, he’d be a perfect fit for the Sharks.
Jones and Reimer would form arguably the best goalie tandem in the NHL. Reimer would spell Jones whenever he needs a break. Both Jones and Reimer haven’t proven that they can be the workhorse goalie who starts about 70 games a year. Jones started 65 games, but most of those came while San Jose didn’t have a capable backup.
Consider how important goaltending depth has been in the postseason. Just two years ago, the Canadiens faltered in the Eastern Conference Final because they had no Plan B once Carey Price got injured. This year, the Pittsburgh Penguins were saved because they had Matt Murray to replace Marc-Andre Fleury. Goaltending depth is very important. The Sharks would be wise to explore re-signing James Reimer.
