Costa Rica took a 2-1 lead over Colombia in Copa America action thanks to an own goal.

With the USMNT’s 1-0 win on Saturday, Costa Rica was eliminated from making it out of the Copa America group stage. Yet, the CONCACAF team showed pride in their early going against Colombia as they scored first. They conceded the equalizer back, but their continual offensive pressure led to Colombia coughing up an own goal.

Costa Rica didn’t have a lot to play for as they faced one of the best teams in the world. Instead of parking the bus and beating Colombia down by kicking at their ankles all night long, Costa Rica came out firing against a Colombia side made up of their second string players.

Colombia’s back-ups haven’t been looking pretty on Saturday especially on the defensive back line. They gave Costa Rica a dangerous set piece that led to their first goal and then couldn’t defend effectively and scored on their own net. Colombia is ranked in the top five and has a lot of great depth from top to bottom, but Costa Rica is exposing the CONMEBOL side on Saturday night in Houston.

A win for Costa Rica would mean that Colombia would finish runner-up in Group A, while the USMNT would end up winning the group with six points. It will be interesting to see what chances Colombia makes at half or if their coaching staff will be content resting the starters and finishing the group stage with a loss to Costa Rica.
