Gordie Howe’s funeral service will be open to the public on Wednesday, June 15th in Detroit, Michigan as thousands will pay their respects to Mr. Hockey.

Hockey lost one of its most iconic players this past week when Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe passed away at the age of 88. Howe played professional hockey from 1946 to 1980, most notably for the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings (1946-71) and the WHA/NHL’s New England/Hartford Whalers (1977-80).

Howe is still easily one of the five greatest players in NHL history, as 23-time All-Star, a four-time Stanley Cup Champion (1950, 1952, 1954-55), and a Hockey Hall of Famer since 1972. Howe still holds several NHL records since he last laced up the skates in 1980 in his early 50s.

Howe’s passing was a huge loss, as he was hockey royalty and the greatest player to have ever played for the Original Six juggernaut Detroit Red Wings. Few athletes in Detroit were as beloved as Howe and it makes perfect sense that Detroit will hold a public memorial service for Mr. Hockey this week.

The Red Wings organization announced Saturday that Howe’s service will take place on Wednesday, June 15th at 11:00 AM at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit.

For those who won’t be able to pay respects to the late Howe on late Wednesday morning in Detroit, the Red Wings will hold an open visitation at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit on Tuesday, June 14th.

The visitation open to the public at Joe Louis Arena will run from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, honoring Howe’s No. 9 retired jersey while he was starring for the Red Wings so many years ago.

Given the proximity to Howe’s native Canada in Detroit, expect Detroit to be packed with grievers of Mr. Hockey on both Tuesday and Wednesday of this upcoming week. Howe’s impact on the sport of ice hockey is without question.
