SF/PF. UCLA. Shabazz Muhammad. 17. player. 125.
Original pick: Dennis Schröder

The Hawks originally picked up one of the better values in this draft with Dennis Schröder at number 17 overall, but Atlanta doesn’t get quite that lucky in the re-draft. Shabazz Muhammad was a (much) more heralded prospect than Schröder in the years leading up to the 2013 draft, but after a checkered freshman year at UCLA, he slipped on draft boards and his career in Minnesota hasn’t been particularly noteworthy.

With that said, Muhammad did string together a quality season in 2015-2016, playing in all 82 games and posting a 15.2 PER that would suggest he was an average contributor. For a mid-first round pick, that is just fine. The Wolves have unlocked something in Muhammad as a “small ball” power forward, using his strong core and lengthy wingspan to allow the former superstar prospect to carve out a nice supporting role.

His shot selection may always be questionable, and Muhammad sometimes appears to forget that he isn’t “the man” at the NBA level. Still, this is a 23-year-old with real athletic gifts and a strong pedigree that looked to figure it out to some extent in his third NBA season. There is a real chance that this is too low for Muhammad, but until he proves more, it seems fair.
