PG. Michigan. Trey Burke. 20. player. 24.
Original pick: Tony Snell

Things haven’t gone particularly well for Trey Burke in Utah.

The former National Player of the Year in college entered the league with much fanfare, but Burke’s limitations have been violently apparent through three seasons in the NBA. Burke’s best asset as a college player was as a shot-maker, but for a myriad of reasons, that trait has not come through at the pro level.

Burke has struggled mightily to create quality looks, as his limited size and athleticism have proved to be an issue. That, along with questionable shot-making overall, have pushed his efficiency to unsustainable levels, with a career true shooting mark of 47.4 percent (woof) and a three-point percentage of only 32.9 percent.

His offensive issues are doubly magnified by the fact that Burke was never going to be a top-flight defender in the NBA. Effort isn’t a question mark for the now 23-year-old, but because of the aforementioned size and burst limitations, it is relatively easy for the opposition to expose Burke as a defensive liability.

Am I scaring you yet?

To be honest, Burke is probably overdrafted at this slot, but there is at least some reason for encouragement given that his best year came in 2015-2016. Expectations have dipped from “above-average starter” to maybe “quality backup”, but Burke is an NBA player at this point and that can’t be said for every member of the 2013 NBA Draft lottery.
