2016 NBA Draft: Best big men
3. Marquese Chriss, PF, Washington
Few prospects in the 2016 NBA Draft have soared up draft boards quite like Marquese Chriss. The California native was a fringe top-60 recruit in the class of 2015, which doesn’t fit the typical one-and-done to likely top-10 pick profile. But pop in a tape from one of Washington’s games this past season, and it won’t take long for Chriss to jump off the screen.
He’s an elite, explosive leaper with very high upside.Chriss’ athleticism is the most exciting part about his game. He could make a highlight tape off of only put-back dunks and lobs from his freshman season at Washington where he has to protect his forehead from hitting the rim. He stands 6-10, 233 pounds with a 7-0 wingspan, which is solid size and length for an NBA power forward, but it’s far more than just his physical profile that makes him one of the most interesting prospects in this year’s draft.
Chriss has a nice fundamental offensive skill set that includes everything from scoring in the post to spotting up for threes. Defensively, he’s raw, but has a great foundation. He’s already proven to be a very good shot blocker, especially when providing weak-side help, and he’s got the footwork and lateral quickness to switch everything and stay in front of smaller wings.
A couple of concerns are that he’s really not a great rebounder, and there’s not really much to suggest that he won’t get shoved around in the post due to his small lower body. He may have to always be paired with a good rebounding big at the next level in order for his team not to get killed on the boards.
It may take time for Chriss to make an impact in the NBA, but he’s got the potential to turn into a really good two-way stretch-four in the NBA.
