Broadway will live stream performance of She Loves Me
By Leah Smith
On June 30, She Loves Me will become the first Broadway musical to be streamed online.
If you can’t make it to New York, for one night, Broadway is coming to you. On June 30th, She Loves Me will be streamed live on Broadway HD, the first time a show will ever be streamed live. It will cost $9.99 to watch the performance.
She Loves Me was brought back to Broadway to celebrate the 50th season for the Roundabout Theatre Company. The revival opened on March 17, 2016, and will run until July 10, at Studio 54.
"“We are proud to be making Broadway history with She Loves Me, the show that launched Roundabout’s Musical Theatre Program in 1993. As a nonprofit institution, this is an incredible opportunity for us to share Scott Ellis’s new Broadway production beyond our subscribers, donors and other ticket buyers for our limited run at Studio 54,” Todd Haimes, the artistic director for Roundabout Theatre Company, said in a press release. “This groundbreaking partnership with BroadwayHD allows us to bring She Loves Me to a large audience throughout the United States, and around the globe.” Via EW."
An adaptation of a Hungarian play from 1938, She Loves Me tells the story of Amalia (Tony winner Laura Benanti) and Gorg (Tony nominee Zachary Levi). They work as clerks at the same parfumerie and are constantly butting heads and seemingly hate each other. In their spare time, they write and fall in love with pen pals that are later revealed to be each other. The rest of the Broadway cast includes Jane Krakowski, Gavin Creel, and Byron Jennings.
If the plot sounds familiar it could be because another adaptation of the same Hungarian play, Parfumerie, was 1998’s You’ve Got Mail starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. Ryan was on hand at this year’s Tonys to introduce the casts’ performance.
She Loves Me was nominated for eight awards including Best Revival of a Musical and walked away with one win for Best Scenic Design of a Musical. 2016 marked the second Broadway revival of the show. It originally ran in1963 and was brought back for its first revival in 1993.
