MLB Trade Rumors: 5 destinations for Jose Reyes
If a player is struggling, the St. Louis Cardinals can usually find a way to turn them around. They have done this with both pitchers and hitters, and developed a handful of prospects into quality major league players.
Now, if the Cardinals were to target Jose Reyes, he would only add to their logjam in the infield. They recently demoted Kolten Wong, and have Johnny Peralta, Almedys Diaz and Matt Carpenter rotating around. Jedd Gyorko is able to spell any of them, but he has struggled this season. If the Cardinals don’t fully trust Wong and lost confidence in Gyorko as a utility-man, maybe Reyes can come in as insurance then.
More than likely, Gyorko would be booted off the roster. He hasn’t provided much production (.225 batting average, .695 OPS) and is replaceable. While Reyes doesn’t have the versatility that Gyorko has, the former can still man second and shortstop, if necessary.
The other alternative is to find a way to squeeze Reyes onto the roster with Gyorko, Wong and others. It would be difficult and requires some creative tinkering from the front office, but there could be a solution.
