MLB Trade Rumors: 5 destinations for Jose Reyes
The San Diego Padres tried loading up on established talent in 2015, and even traded away most of their farm system, but it led to little results. It only got worse in 2016, as the Padres currently sit in last place in the NL West.
The middle infield hasn’t been a position of strength for the Padres by any means. They have used players like Alexi Amarista, Cody Spangenberg, Adam Rosales, Yangeris Solarte, and Alexi Ramirez up the middle, but none of them have done much.
If the Padres chose to bring in Jose Reyes, he wouldn’t suddenly revitalize the team. However, Reyes would be an upgrade over most of those players, and could play be a stopgap second basement for the rest of the season. San Diego has little reason to not take a flier on Reyes, who will be looking to prove that he still has talent left in the tank. If they sign him and he produces for the next 30 days, it’s possible the Padres could flip him at the July 31 non-waiver deadline or the August 31 waiver deadline.
