5 reasons New York Knicks shouldn’t trade for Derrick Rose
By John Buhler
4. Does Rose even fit in Jeff Hornacek’s offense?
While it caught most of the basketball world completely off guard, it does seem that the hiring of former Phoenix Suns head coach Jeff Hornacek is a solid fit for the Knicks organization that supposedly wanted to take its offense out of the Dark Ages after being slogged into redundancy in team president Phil Jackson’s antiquated Triangle Offense.
Though the 2015-16 Suns spontaneously combusted into awfulness, Hornacek did take an island of misfit toys and put together some creative offensive lineups. While they didn’t always work, Phoenix found success in Hornacek’s first year and a half on the job playing as many as three different point guards on the floor at the same time.
In short, Hornacek knows what he’s doing or at least is willing to experiment with different looks in the back court. New York will probably become a quicker paced, jump shooting team with Hornacek at the helm, but how would Rose fit into the equation?
By hinting at making a trade with Chicago for Rose, it almost seems like Jackson and management are in a way undercutting what Hornacek wants to do with the Knicks offense. If the Knicks had to run The Triangle again in 2016-17, then yes, Rose might be a logical choice to run the point. However, in a pace and space offense likely coming from Hornacek, Rose is a square peg in a round hole.
