5 reasons New York Knicks shouldn’t trade for Derrick Rose
By John Buhler
3. Rose is a ball-dominant point guard that doesn’t shoot threes.
Rose is a career 30.2% shooter from beyond the arc. He hasn’t shot above 29.3% in either of the last two seasons. He’s a 44.8% shooter from the field in his career and hasn’t shot better than 42.7% on his field goals in either of the last two seasons.
Since missing all of the 2012-13 NBA season and playing in only 10 games in 2013-14, Rose’s offensive game has deteriorated into little more than a mediocre ball-dominant point guard that can’t shoot threes.
While he’s still a 15 points per game and five assists per game type of player for the Bulls, his diminished offensive game hampered by a litany of injuries doesn’t seem like it will mesh well with another ball hog in Anthony and a potentially dynamic stretch five who needs to catch-and-shoot in Porzingis.
If Rose were to go to the Knicks, New York’s big three would become a poor man’s version of what the Cleveland Cavaliers have in LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Love. Anthony would be the bizarro version of James, Rose and Irving are somewhat comparable, and unfortunately for Porzingis, he’d be out there all alone on the perimeter not getting shot attempts in an offense catered around Anthony and Rose’s insatiable need to hold on to the basketball.
Next: 2. The Knicks have no viable trade assets.
