5 reasons New York Knicks should trade for Derrick Rose
By Brad Weiss
1. The Knicks are very weak at point guard.
The New York Knicks are really weak at the point guard spot, and Rose may be the most talented player available to fit that need. The team has some solid big men, and they would instantly be upgraded as a potential contender in the weak Eastern Conference if they could get some backcourt help. New head coach Jeff Hornacek will definitely want to find someone who can run the offense with more consistency than was shown by the Knicks point guards last year.
They will head into the 2016-17 season with a trio of point guard options that does not blow anybody away. Incumbent starter Jose Calderon looked very old on defense last year, and has not been the kind of player they were hoping for when the franchise traded Wilson Chandler and Raymond Felton for him as part of a blockbuster deal in 2014.
The Knicks also have second-year player Jerian Grant and free agent signee Tony Wroten, though neither of them could seriously help the Knicks contend next year. Grant should eventually be a solid point guard in the league, but he is a few years away. Hornacek likes to get out and run, and a healthy Rose could be the kind of facilitator that could make a difference.
Signing Rose would not only immediately upgrade the position, but it would immediately upgrade the team.
