2016 NBA Draft: Hardest names to pronounce, ranked
1. Egidijus Mockevicius, C, Evansville
I’ll be honest: Until Thursday, I hadn’t ever heard of Egidijus Mockevicius. DraftExpress doesn’t have him ranked among its top 100 prospects, while ESPN.com’s Chad Ford has him 96th in his latest Top 100. Though draft analysts would undoubtedly prefer to avoid stumbling their way through his name on draft night, Ford noted that Mockevicius impressed at a recent workout in Las Vegas to the extent that “multiple teams flagged him as someone they wanted to see either in draft workouts or in summer league.”
The odds remain against Mockevicius hearing his name called on June 23, as there likely won’t be a huge market for a soon-to-be 24-year-old center with limited size (6’10” in shoes with a 7’0″ wingspan, per DraftExpress). Though he averaged 15.7 points, 13.9 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game this past season as a senior at Evansville, the quality of competition he faced in college won’t do him any favors. He shot just 32.3 percent on two-point jumpers this past season and a whopping 78 percent of his shots came at the rim, per Hoop-Math.com, so NBA teams can’t expect him to develop into a well-rounded offensive threat.
If a team is in need of a reserve shot-blocker or rebounding presence, though, here’s hoping they spend a late second-round pick on Mockevicius just to see the look on announcers’ faces. Good luck getting this right:
