4. Bulls were not signing Rose long-term

Derrick Rose is set to become a free agent next offseason. If he was still the player that he used to be, the Bulls would currently be tripping over themselves figuring out how to get Rose back in the fold on a max contract.

However, it is no longer 2011. The 2016 version of Rose pales in comparison to his former MVP self, and the Bulls were extremely likely to cut bait with him next offseason. Rose is still a starting NBA-caliber point guard, but it was time for the Bulls to move on.

The Bulls may not have gotten a huge return for Rose, but getting anything in exchange for him is better than losing him for free next offseason. Rose may turn his career around, but without his trademark explosiveness from the past, I am not holding my breath.

Derrick Rose is damaged goods, and the Bulls knew it. They got what they could for him before it was too late.
