NBA Draft: Every team’s least popular pick ever
Minnesota Timberwolves – Jonny Flynn (2009)
Low-key, one of the players who isn’t mentioned nearly as often as he should be when it comes to busts in the NBA Draft is Jonny Flynn and the Minnesota Timberwovles. The Wolves not only had two picks in the first round of the 2009 NBA Draft, but they had the No. 5 and 6 picks in the draft and should’ve been able to get two great talents. After they took Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio at five, though, the Wolves then took another point guard in Flynn at No. 6.
Even if you discount who was taken just one pick after Flynn, he was still a terrible selection. Flynn lasted just two seasons in Minnesota and all but proved wholly that he wasn’t going to get the job done. He didn’t have any discernable consistent NBA skills to speak of and it was abundantly clear that nothing about his game was going to lead to him being quality in the league. And that was only amplified by the fact that Stephen Curry was taken one pick after him.
Flynn’s a bust in any regard and some may even consider Rubio the same. However, Curry being there makes it worse and the fact that Flynn was out of the league after three seasons puts the nail in his own coffin as an unpopular pick.
