Boston Celtics – Kedrick Brown (2001)

There have been a few blunders (and even tragedies) when it comes to the Boston Celtics in the draft. Moreover, there were more than a few mishaps and unpopular picks when it comes to the 2001 draft—especially in the lottery. However, one of the overlooked blunders of that draft in the lottery came from Boston at the No. 11 pick when they took Kedrick Brown.

Admittedly, the Celtics were in a position to take a bit of a risk at No. 11. They were picking back-to-back in the lottery at Nos. 10 and 11 and had already taken Joe Johnson. However, that doesn’t change the enormous risk of taking Brown out of Okaloosa-Walton Community College with the No. 11 pick. It was an unheard of move at the time that seemed perplexing. Even in retrospect knowing that there weren’t a great number of All-Stars selected after him that could’ve reasonably been picked in that position, it’s still a bit disappointing.

Brown played in a grand total of 143 games in the NBA over the course of four seasons, averaging just 3.1 points and 2.6 rebounds in the 101 games he played for the Celtics. If that’s not a completely abhorrent selection in the lottery, I’m not sure what is.
