Washington Wizards – Kwame Brown (2001)

Of course one of the most famous disappointments in the history of the draft is saved for last with the Washington Wizards. At the time when the craze about high school players coming out of the NBA was at it’s peak, the Wizards went into the 2001 NBA Draft with the top pick. There would be three high schoolers taken in the first four picks—but Kwame Brown would undoubtedly become the most infamous of the trio.

Quite frankly, it never looked like Kwame Brown loved the game of basketball. That may seem like an oversimplified statement, but it’s true. You’re never going to be successful at the professional level of a sport if you don’t love it or want to play it on some level and that never was really the case it seemed with Brown. So his career-best averages with a strong 6-11 frame of a meager 10.9 points and 7.4 rebounds per game were less than stellar.

Even worse is that Brown only lasted his rookie contract with the Wizards before the team didn’t want anything to do with him anymore, showing him the door. He lives on in infamy as one of the biggest draft busts of all time and as a punch line. And when that’s the case, it’s not difficult to be the least popular.
