NBA Draft: Every team’s least popular pick ever
Chicago Bulls – Eddy Curry (2001)
Remember that talk we had before about the 2001 draft being a bit of a dumpster fire with some of the draft busts. The Chicago Bulls were undoubtedly involved in one of those picks high up in the lottery. Picking with the No. 4 overall selection on the night, the Bulls elected to take Eddy Curry out of Thornwood High School with the pick. That would turn out to be a severe error in judgment.
After Kwame Brown (I wonder if we’ll talk about him more a little later) and Tyson Chandler were taken with the top-two picks in the 2011 draft, the overblown love for high school prospects continued at No. 4 with Curry. And granted, Curry’s size alone was enough to intrigue teams. However, it’s hard to look at his skill level at the time (even if hindsight is 20-20) and think that this was a grave mistake from the very beginning for Chicago.
Curry played out his first four seasons with the Bulls and had some better years than some might remember, including a 16.1-point, 5.4-rebound per game output in Year 4. However, that he left after only four years in Chicago and that he was never a consistent star in the league was wholly disappointing and something Bulls fans can still lament.
