PF. Gonzaga. Domantas Sabonis . 16. player. 18. The Celtics own three 1st round picks and five 2nd round picks in this years draft — it’s safe to say they won’t be keeping all of them. With their first pick they passed on Dragan Bender and selected Kris Dunn so here in the mid-first round Domantas Sabonis is a safe pick and helps shore up their gaping hole at power forward at the moment.

Sabonis already has an NBA physique at 6-10, 230 pounds. He finished his last season at Gonzaga by averaging 17.6 points and 11.8 rebounds as their monster in the paint. Sabonis — the son of NBA great Arvydas — shows flashes of his Dad’s vision from time to time finding open teammates out of the post, but he is still developing in terms of decision-making. The reason Sabonis will drop this low is due to his lack of length for his size and the fact that he’s just not a rim protector. He only notched 31 total blocks in his 36 games for the Bulldogs last season, so while he can hold his own in the post, he doesn’t offer much in the form of resistance at the rim.

The Celtics desperately need size to add to the budding core of explosive wings. With Avery Bradley, Marcus Smart, Isaiah Thomas and Jae Crowder the back court is pretty much set. However Amir Johnson and David Lee leave much to be desired in the paint. Sabonis could fill that void and start contributing almost immediately.
